When Duncan McKaskel decided to move his family west, he knew he would face dangers, and he was prepared for them. He knew about the exhausting terrain, and he was expecting the punishing elements. What he worried about was having to use violence against other men - men who would follow him and try to steal the riches that he didn't even possess.
Yet bandits were only part of McKaskel's worries. For a mysterious stranger, Con Vallian, had appeared one night and saved his life. But was Vallian's true interest Duncan's wife, Susanna? And, more important, how did she feel about him?
As they push on into the wilderness, Duncan must discover who is the greater threat - the thieves outside his camp or the enigmatic stranger within.

A good Novel by a top writer of Western Fiction.. The Quick and the Dead casts a light on the Western migration that is more realistic and less Hollywood heroic. It asks the question ,How can an educated gentleman's family survive the dangers of the trail West and those posed by the murderous white trash that scavenged from the weak along its verge. I's a rare Western novel in which the good characters are more complex than the evil ones who are merely evil. This complexity stats with Con Valian, the unknown plainsman who aids the Duncan McKaskel Family. The Plainsman's name suggests both good and evil. The first name Con sound a bit like conman or convict while the last name is almost valiant but not quite. Even in his introduction the plainsman's name foreshadows the behavior of a complex character who is uncertain of his role.Product details

The Quick and the Dead (Audible Audio Edition) Louis L'Amour Jason Culp Random House Audio Books Reviews
Great, good, fast paced. Wonderful old west story. A nice Eastern Family, a drifting westerners, and a band of very bad men.
I have to be at work by the time you read this and I don't think I can make the decision to the right size
Picked this book up on a whim when taking advantage of 's amazing 4-for-the-price-of-3 deal on Louis L'Amour novels. It turned out to be the best of the four!
The story of a mysterious stranger who helps a tender-foot family survive in the unforgiving midwest, The Quick and the Dead has the action rolling from page two. The story never gets boring, and has an excellent cast of outlaws to hate. There also happens to be some beautiful insight into how a family can change when faced with hardship and unreasonable men.
If you're looking for a quick, well-written, and enjoyable story you can't go wrong with this novel. And if you happen to be less thrilled than I was, you're not going to lose much time as the story is only 187 pages.
A very good story. Great characters all well developed with a strong hero. The story moves well and keeps your interest. I would highly recommend this book to anyone that is interested in stories of the old west.
Loved it! The farmer family and the grizzled frontersman struggling against almost insurmountable odds was fascinating. Each character was clearly drawn, the situations were dramatic but representative of the time and place, and the slow transformation from naive eastener to savy western pioneer was magnificant. This story is marvelous.
One of his best! The loner/drifter sets aside his approach to life if only to impart it onto settlers naive about the harshness, ruggedness, and dangers of the West. I've read this book several times and own the film. Great adventure! Too bad they "stole" the name for that Gene Hackman, Leo DiCaprio, Sharon Stone, Russell Crowe send-up.
I started reading The Quick and The Dead in New Mexico last year at a bed & breakfast and only now got a copy and finished it. L'Amour's style of writing is exceptional and his ability to spin a yarn is enviable.
The Quick & The Dead is a page-turner and, like other works of the author, can teach people about the rough and rugged outdoors and the challenges faced by trekking out into the wilderness. It cannot, however, convey what would possess a sophisticated family to leave the safety and security of the East and head out to a land with no doctors, no lawmen, but with plenty of Indians and bad sorts.
The suspense in the book may keep you up late at night reading it, but the last few pages wrap up very quickly -- maybe too quickly. Almost as if L'Amour was late fer dinner and his wife was callin' him to c'mon. But it also ends wonderfully and the book is highly recommended.
I want to read more of this author. And there's plenty to choose from.
